How do you reconcile this approach with the amount of information required to access the free demo on Xero? Five fields including a phone number + acknowledgment of TOU. Is it proving to be a barrier to people trying the demo?

I used Tripit last year when we went over to the UK. As you mentioned it was incredibly easy. Just the other day I signed up to the Qik video streaming service (personal broadcasting from your mobile phone) and there was no need to register either. You're assigned a temporary username and password when you create your first video, and this is sent to your phone as an SMS message.

37Signals' Backpack app allows you to create pages of different content but each page has it's own email address.

So you email a "page" to add different kinds of content. Works quite well.

There's more info here: http://www.backpackit.com/email/

That's fantastic - I just tried it and got an incredibly complete response from a very shabby confirmation email. Nice one.
