it is interesting seeing the different projects people get involved in. 

I became pretty skeptical of AID agency and NGO&#039;s in my 1000 Day trip. 

Too many of them screwing up the local economy, and then pulling out after 1 or 2 years. (ie free food staples for anyone/everyone/anytime for 2 years... then just leave)

I think you hit on the right option tho. Helping those who are already helping themselves. Dont give a hand out, give a hand up. 

What about happiness? I think the happiest people Ive seen all over the world are the ones that we look on as the poorest!
They have a great social support network of family &amp; friends.
Their circle of knowledge vs circle of influence is very tight.
Which are things that are very different in Western culture. 

eg - people laying dead in their apartment for years before anyone notices.
