“The economic situation is apparently so grim that some experts fear we may be in for a stretch as bad as the mid seventies … when Microsoft and Apple were founded.”
“We haven’t got much money, so we have to think”
Trade Me was launched in 1999, just as the first tech bubble burst spectacularly.
I wonder which companies will look back on the current financial crisis and think that it was possibly the perfect time to launch?
Feel free to nominate some possible candidates…
UPDATE: I didn’t realise when I posted these quotes this morning, but today is actually the 100th anniversary of Ernest Rutherford’s award of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. :-)
Hopefully the first product from my mad scientist lab. :)
I think this is a good observation. While I can’t point to other launch candidates at the moment, our company has in a bizzare way been benefiting from a protracted capital raising round due to the tighter credit market. It has forced us to continue refining and revising our business plan, simplifying down and focusing to a point where our original document looks like an encyclopedia. (Hopefully now we have the right mix! :P)
For those launching now, or existing teams raising capital, the current climate will definitely breed leaner, meaner and much hungrier companies.
